Richard Eastell is Professor of Bone Metabolism and Director of the Mellanby Centre for Bone Research at the University of Sheffield, UK. He qualified in medicine from Edinburgh in 1977. He trained in endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic under Dr. B.L. Riggs for 5 years.

Dr. Eastell leads a research group on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis; of particular note is the contribution to the clinical utility of biochemical markers of bone turnover and the development of treatments for osteoporosis. The publications of the Sheffield group put them in the top four, internationally, in osteoporosis (ISI Thompson).

His work has recently been recognized by the Ian MacIntyre Award, 2011 (Harvey Institute, London), Philippe Bordier Award, 2012 (European Calcified Tissue Society), Frederic C. Bartter Award, 2014 (American Society for Bone and Mineral Research), and Translational Cancer Research Prize, 2014, as an IBIS Team Member (Cancer Research UK).
