Ending Structural Racism in Biomedical Research and Eliminating Health
|
|
The ODP stands with NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins and the 27 NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices in support of the new UNITE initiative to end structural racism and racial inequities in biomedical research.
Achieving racial equity in biomedical research and addressing health disparities is a complex challenge that requires sustained investment and unwavering dedication from all of us. The NIH and the ODP continue to roll out efforts to promote equity and inclusion and eliminate structural racism.
Learn about current activities including calls to develop, implement, and disseminate innovative and effective interventions that will prevent, reduce, or eliminate health disparities and advance health equity.

Did you know?
- The NIH extended the deadline for its Request for Information seeking public comment on efforts to strengthen equity in the biomedical research workforce. The ODP encourages you to share this with your networks in the scientific research, advocacy, clinical practice, and non-scientific communities and to provide feedback via the submission website by April 23, 2021.
- The ODP has a new Health Disparities webpage where you can find resources, funding, news, and information about research on health disparities and disease prevention.

Carrie Klabunde, Ph.D., will be retiring from full-time federal service at the end of June but will continue to serve as an advisor to the ODP following her retirement. Dr. Klabunde joined the ODP in January 2015 as a Senior Advisor for Disease Prevention. Over the past six years, she has led the ODP’s efforts to identify prevention research areas for investment across the NIH, served as the scientific advisor for the ODP’s Pathways to Prevention Program, and was the NIH liaison to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the Community Preventive Services Task Force. Before coming to the ODP, Dr. Klabunde spent nearly 20 years at the National Cancer Institute. We are grateful for all she’s done for the ODP and the NIH!
Kaitlin Akif, M.P.H., joined the ODP as a Presidential Management Fellow in March 2021.
