I am excited to share our Spotlight on 2021 annual report, highlighting some of the ODP’s accomplishments this past year. In addition to the progress made on the key projects featured in the report, which I hope you will take the time to explore, 2021 was a special year for the ODP because it marked the 35th anniversary of our Office. I would like to recognize all the work that has been done to increase the scope, quality, dissemination, and impact of prevention research at the NIH since our Office’s founding in 1986.

New Year, New Resource: Stepped Wedge Group-Randomized Trials
The NIH Research Methods Resources (RMR) website, which is managed by the ODP, now includes information about stepped wedge group-randomized trials (SWGRTs). SWGRTs are group-randomized trials (GRTs) that allow each group to cross from control to intervention at a prespecified time and in a random, staggered order. These trials have become quite common over the last 15 years, particularly in the evaluation of health care delivery interventions. On the RMR site, you will find background material and references on how to use SWGRTs, as well as a new sample size calculator that accommodates the three most-used versions of SWGRTs.
In addition to SWGRTs, the RMR website features materials and sample size calculators for parallel GRTs and individually randomized group-treatment (IRGT) trials. NIH funding opportunities that may involve trials that randomize and/or deliver interventions to groups now often encourage investigators to use the information, references, and three custom-built sample size calculators on the RMR site in their research applications. Investigators proposing these types of trials need to satisfy the NIH's clinical research requirements and show that the selected methodology, statistical analysis, and sample size are appropriate.
We hope you will refer to the RMR site often and help us spread the word about these resources. Please email rmr@od.nih.gov with any questions or feedback.
Seeking Volunteers To Help Enhance the ODP Website
Help us improve prevention.nih.gov! The ODP is looking for volunteers from the prevention research community to participate in a 20-to 30-minute Zoom interview with an outside research group. Your feedback will help us better understand:
- The usability of the ODP website
- The types of information and resources you need and rely upon
- The ease or difficulty of finding or accessing information and resources you need
We appreciate your insights! Your comments will be aggregated with other participant comments, and your name will not be used in any report or summary that may be shared with the ODP.
Still Time To Comment on the Workshop Panel's Draft Report!
An unbiased, independent panel developed a draft report following the recent NIH Pathways to Prevention Workshop: Improving Rural Health Through Telehealth-Guided Provider-to-Provider Communication. The draft report summarizes workshop discussions and identifies future research priorities. Comments will be accepted through February 4, 2022.
