10 Years of Protecting Public Health Through Tobacco Regulatory Research
|
|
“Kids are flocking to flavored, disposable e-cigarettes, study finds” – The Washington Post
“New ‘candy’ e-cigs catch fire after U.S. regulators stamp out Juul’s flavors” – Reuters
Headlines like these highlight a real challenge for people who want to protect kids from the harms of using tobacco products. While flavors, such as mint, menthol, watermelon, and apple pie, are safe to consume in food products, inhaling them in tobacco products can be harmful and put the health of our kids at risk.
To help mark the 10th anniversary of the Tobacco Regulatory Science Program (TRSP), this message (which was originally featured on the NIH Director’s Blog) highlights how TRSP-supported research has led to effective health policies to protect young people from the harms of using flavored tobacco products.

FDA and NIH Award Funding for the Center for Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and NIH have awarded the Center for Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco (CRST). Through rapid surveillance and reporting of information, CRST will enhance the FDA Center for Tobacco Products’ (CTP) and the research community’s ability to understand, document, and quantify changes in the tobacco product marketplace and tobacco use patterns to inform tobacco product regulatory activities.
CRST is supported through the TRSP and is administered through a cooperative agreement under award number 1U01CA278695-01, Rutgers Center of Excellence in Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco. It will be led by Cristine Delnevo, Ph.D., at Rutgers University, with substantial involvement from six sentinel states, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), NIH, and CTP scientific staff, as well as external advisors with relevant expertise.
New Publications on Research Gaps Related to Nutritional Interventions for People With Cancer
Two new publications based on the NIH Pathways to Prevention Workshop: Nutrition as Prevention for Improved Cancer Health Outcomes are now available:
- The independent panel report summarizes the workshop and outlines research gaps. It also provides a conceptual framework to assist researchers, funders, and policymakers in moving the field forward.
- The systematic evidence review synthesizes published research related to the workshop key questions

Pathway to Practice Resource Center
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Tools and resources produced by the CDC-funded Prevention Research Centers. Community organizations and public health practitioners can tailor these resources to identify, replicate, and use key aspects of successful public health programs and inspire others to expand the uptake and use of evidence-based interventions.
Sexual & Gender Minority Measurement & Data
NIH Sexual & Gender Minority Research Office
Resources on measures and methods to accurately capture and understand sexual and gender minority populations. Information includes recommended and validated measures for sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI), examples of surveys that collect SOGI data, and related publications.
Registry of Studies
National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research
A searchable database of community-based studies assessing known factors impacting rates of childhood obesity, providing information on the study design, measures, content areas, and populations examined.

Community Preventive Services Task Force 2022 Annual Report to Congress
The Community Preventive Services Task Force’s (CPSTF) 2022 Annual Report to Congress spotlights CPSTF recommendations for evidence-based intervention approaches to increase physical activity for everyone in a variety of settings. The report also summarizes recommendations and findings issued by CPSTF in Fiscal Year 2022, identifies gaps in research, and shares priority areas for future CPSTF reviews. CPSTF is an independent, nonfederal panel of public health and prevention experts that provides recommendations and findings on programs, services, and other interventions to protect and improve population health.
Request for Information: Draft Department of Health and Human Services 2023 Framework To Support and Accelerate Smoking Cessation
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently issued a Request for Information inviting public feedback on the Draft HHS 2023 Framework To Support and Accelerate Smoking Cessation. When finalized, the framework will guide HHS efforts to sustain and strengthen existing programs and drive further progress toward smoking cessation, with an emphasis on serving populations and communities disproportionately impacted by smoking-related morbidity and mortality.

NIH Institutional Excellence in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in Biomedical and Behavioral Research Prize Competition
The NIH Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Prize Competition aims to recognize and reward transformative cultures, systems, projects, and processes that institutions of higher education have developed to promote inclusive excellence and create research environments that promote and value a culture of DEIA. NIH will award up to 10 prizes of $100,000 each to higher education institutions that demonstrate a commitment to creating cultures of inclusive excellence and enhancing DEIA in the biomedical and behavioral research enterprise.
