About Dr. McDonagh

Marian McDonagh is a professor in Oregon Health & Science University’s (OHSU) Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology (School of Medicine), where she is Co-Director of the Pacific Northwest Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC). Dr. McDonagh has extensive knowledge of evaluating comparative effectiveness of drug and nondrug treatments, is an expert in applying standard methodologies, and is involved in developing emerging methodologies for systematic reviews. She served as PI for work done by the EPC for the Drug Effectiveness Review Project (DERP) from 2003—2018.  The project was funded by a collaboration of state Medicaid agencies that commission reviews to evaluate the evidence on effectiveness and safety comparisons between drugs within and across classes. In addition, she conducts evidence review work for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) Effective Health Care Program, U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), the NIH, CDC, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Dr. McDonagh has conducted reviews to inform Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs, as well as clinical practice guidelines development. Dr. McDonagh teaches a graduate level course and conducts empiric methodological research on systematic review methodology.

Dr. McDonagh received a Pharm.D. from the University of Washington, a B.S. in pharmacy from Oregon State University, and completed a residency at the Carl T. Hayden Veteran’s Affairs Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. She served as a research fellow at the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York, York, England, and currently serves as affiliate faculty at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy and Oregon State University College of Pharmacy.
